How Diet Impacts Vaginal Odor

The foods you eat have a greater impact on your physiology than you may have ever realized. While many of us think of food as a way to fuel up the body or as a stress buster, but it also has an impact on the environment that is your body. While what you eat won’t cause strong vaginal odor, it can impact how you smell and highlight certain scents over others. There isn’t a lot of research done into this, but certainly plenty of women have tracked which foods caused what odors. Furthermore, some foods increase the odds of getting an infection which leads to vaginal odor, so it’s worth knowing. Keep in mind that you don’t have to avoid these foods outright, but it is a good idea to only eat them in moderation.

Foods Which have an Impact on Vaginal Odor

According to Oregon State University, foods of various sorts have an impact on our vaginal odor. This is because some foods directly impact the rather fragile eco-system found in the vagina. The following foods in particular can change your smell:

  • Heavily spiced foods
  • Coffee
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Strong spices
  • Heavily scented foods
  • Alcohol
  • Excessive meat
  • Excessive dairy

These can have a negative impact on your vaginal odor. If you want to have a more mild scent try eating more of the following:

  • Whole grains
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables

Obviously you don’t have to cut out everything and live on grains, fruits and veggies! But strongly spiced and scented foods can have an impact on your smell. The best way to check is to drop all of the foods other than whole grains, fruits and veggies and then slowly add them back and track how you smell after each new addition. And, although the particularly foul odor is known as a fishy odor, eating fish may not necessarily cause the problem (unless you eat a ton of fish)!

Junk Food and Vaginal Health

Although eating sugars may seem like it can make you taste sweeter (it won’t), eating a ton of junk food is a good way to get into stinky trouble. Excessive amounts of sugar in your body provide a breeding ground for bacteria, including vaginal bacteria which can cause infections and odor. Cutting down on the amount of sugar you eat can clear up a whole pile of potential problems in the body and make you smell more mild. It’s a small thing to keep in mind, but there it is.

Obviously there is no hard and fast rule about what to eat and what not to eat if you want to avoid vaginal odor. A good rule of thumb is, as always, to eat anything in moderation. Cut down on things like meat, dairy and sugar and increase your intake of fruits and vegetables and you’ll not only smell better, but you’ll feel better too! All of that can help you enjoy your sex life and make the most of everything else the world has to offer.
